Fix System Service Exception in Windows 10, 8.1 and 8

This blue screen of death arises due to drivers issue especially graphics drivers like AMD or NVIDIA problem. Else, Some incompatible or problematic programs and updates may cause this BSOD. However, If you can find out the culprit, It will be easier to repair this error.


Fix System Service Exception in Windows 10, 8.1, 8

People face System Service Exception due to AMD or NVIDIA graphics driver problem and any windows updates like KB2778344 more. Anyway, Before proceeding to actual methods, I recommend you to disable your antivirus program, disconnect external USB devices and run chkdsk command and see If it gives the positive signal.   1.     Once your PC started in safe mode, Open device manager from the control panel. Just go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound and open Device Manager.
  2.     In device manager find any drivers’ name with the yellow sign.
  3.     If you see any driver with the yellow sign from the list, just uninstall it and install it again with the latest driver software.
  4.     If you have AMD or NVIDIA graphics card, Try to update it to the latest version. Even, Intel HD graphics driver problem can be responsible for this BSOD. In that case, You will need to update this driver to latest version.
  5.     Now restart your PC.


This method will fix system service exception BSOD error. But if your system service exception error is due to an update number KB2778344 or anything else, you will have to follow method 2. 

Method 2: Remove Security Update KB2778344 to Fix System Service Exception

  • Start your PC in Safe Mode.
  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and click on View installed updates.
  • Now right click on  Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2778344) and Select Uninstall to remove this update.
  • In Uninstall an update confirmation box, click on Yes.
  • After uninstalling, restart your PC.
It should fix system service exception blue screen error.

Method 3: Uninstall Recently Installed Programs or Update:

It is possible that your problem has been caused by any program that you have installed recently. Else, Most recent windows update may not go through the right way.   • First of all, Press Windows Key + R from the keyboard.

Method 4: Repair Corrupted or Missing System Files

If your important system files are missing or corrupted, You may encounter this BSOD. In this case, You will need to repair corrupted or missing system files. It is very easy. To do it –
  • Open Command Prompt as admin. To do it, Just right click on command prompt and select run as administrator. If you are in windows 10 or 8.1, Right click on Start Button and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Now, Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • It will automatically fix the system files problem.

After disabling webcam, You may still face the problem. Especially, In windows 10, McAfee and any other, any virus may cause system_service_exception (ks.sys) problem. So, You may need to completely remove your antivirus temporarily to check if it helps. Every antivirus should have a tool to remove them completely from your PC. For Example: If you have just uninstalled McAfee from your PC, Run this tool to remove it completely. Then restart your PC and see the problem has gone away. If you have installed any virtual drive software, You also can temporarily uninstall it and see what happens.

2. Fix System Service Exception (ntfs.sys):

Your Bit Defender antivirus and any VPN client, You can uninstall them to fix this error with the specific driver name ntfs.sys. Asus Laptop or PC users may have a software named Asus GameFirst Service. It may cause this error. So, You can uninstall it.

3. System Service Exception during Playing Video Game or HD Video:

It is very common that you may face it during play a video game. In that case, If you have installed MSI Live Update and Xsplit software, You can uninstall them. You also may need to update your video drivers.

Alternative Method to Fix System Service Exception:

Alternatively, At first, you can perform clean boot. It will help you to know if any third-party service is causing the error system service exception. If it doesn’t help, You can restore your windows to an earlier state to fix system service exception.

Legacy Advanced Boot Menu in Windows 10

Sometimes you may need to access in advanced boot menu of your windows PC. But in windows 8, 8.1 and windows 10, advanced boot menu is disabled by default. That means pressing F8 or Shift+F8 may not work. As a result, you can’t turn on your PC in safe mode. You have to enable legacy advanced boot menu in windows 8/8.1 and windows 10 manually.

Enable Legacy Advanced Boot Menu in Windows 8/8.1/10:

To enable legacy advanced boot menu in windows, you have to follow a few steps given below-
  • At first you need your windows installation DVD or pen drive. Insert it in your PC.
  • Now restart your PC.
  • Now press F12 or F10 (Depends on your PC) to open boot menu.
  • Select boot from CD/DVD or USB Storage drive and press enter.
  • Now you may see an dialogue ‘Press any key to continue’. Then press any button from your keyboard.
  • Now you will see windows setup box. Click on Next.
  • Then click on Repair your computer.
  • Now choose an option and click on troubleshoot.
  • Then click on advanced option.
  • In advanced option, click on command prompt.
  • In command prompt, type c: and press enter from your keyboard.
  • Now type BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY and press enter to enable legacy advanced boot menu.


  • After completing the process of enabling legacy advanced boot menu, type EXIT in command prompt and press enter.
  • Now back to Choose an option screen and click on Continue. Your PC will be restarted.
  • Eject your windows installation DVD or disconnect your Pendrive.
  • Done.

    Verify Advanced Boot Menu:

    Restart your PC and press F8 continuously. If you see a black screen with some new options included safe mood, you should be sure that you have enabled legacy advanced boot menu successfully.
