Problem Statement: When users try to add the contact on Lync or
search contact on Lync its shows presence unknown, there are multiple reason.
- Users may new created and using Lync. Wait for few hours to update SIP address entry and Address book. It will resolve automatically.
- Deploy the federation feature or multiple Front End pools in the environment.
- May you have more than 100 contacts?
Resolution:
You need to modify
the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly.

You can update
your Lync status by resetting Lync status. See below screenshot.

KB2739693 which will tell you that presence unknown may
occur, if you apply the Update 2571543 or later CU for Lync 2010 client.
Case 3:
Out-of-Date Outlook Contacts
This issue has been around for awhile but can become more noticeable over time.
When a Lync 2013 user searches for a contact in the Search Contact box, the contact will show an incorrect Presence state.
he resolution is simple enough – delete the SIP profile directory and
restart the client. The SIP profile folder is located here:
> %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
Note – I achieved the same results just deleting the local address book files (GalContacts.db and GalContacts.db.idx) but you should delete the whole folder to be safe.
As the Next Hop article points out, deleting this SIP profile folder
will trigger a complete address book download at a random interval in
the next hour from when the client is restarted. A user can tell if the
address book is completely downloaded when the “Address book
synchronizing” status goes away when searching for a contact
